A Life Built Around Dogs

Dogs have always been a part of my life—not just as pets, but as working partners, companions, and teachers.

Over the last 30+ years, I’ve worked with thousands of dogs across a wide range of environments—from everyday homes to complex behavioral cases.

Some of the most important lessons didn’t come from training sessions.
They came from observing dogs—and wolves—in their natural environments.

 

Learning From Wolves

My work has taken me into wolf refuges and wild landscapes across the U.S.

Watching wolves changes how you see dogs.

They move with purpose.
They communicate without constant correction.
They exist in balance with their environment.

That perspective reshapes everything.

 

The Problem With Traditional Gear

Over the years, I kept seeing the same pattern.

People wanted better experiences with their dogs—but the tools they were using often made things more complicated.

Hands were occupied.
Gear felt bulky or disconnected.
Essentials were scattered.

And most importantly—none of it reflected how people actually move with their dogs in real life.

 

Why This System Just Made Sense

One of the biggest constraints I saw repeatedly was simple:

In many public spaces, dogs are required to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

At the same time, people were trying to move more freely with their dogs—especially outdoors.

What I saw instead were makeshift setups:

• Leashes wrapped around waists

• Slung over shoulders

• Clipped in ways that felt inconsistent or awkward

I had already been using a backpack-based approach for years.

Eventually, clients started asking:

“How are you doing that?”

That’s when it became clear:

Instead of forcing a leash to work on its own, it made more sense to integrate it into something people already use—a backpack.

A system could:

• Keep your dog connected within real-world leash requirements

• Allow hands-free movement
