Active dog eating meal outdoors on hiking trail

What Should You Feed an Adventure Dog? Raw vs Grains vs Cold-Pressed — What the Research Really Says

Jennifer McCarthy

For over three decades, I’ve raised, trained and worked with dogs who spent more time on mountain trails than in living rooms — from wolf-dogs in the Rockies to my current adventure partner, Jessie. One thing has always been clear:

Active dogs need better fuel.

A dog who hikes, camps, runs, and spends long days outdoors has different nutritional needs than a dog who lounges on the sofa. Their diets must support stamina, recovery, joint health, hydration, and long-burning energy.

But with so many dog food trends — raw, grain-free, human-grade, cold-pressed — owners often feel lost.

This guide breaks it all down:
The science
The real-world results
What works best for adventure dogs
And how the right feeding system enhances mealtime health

Let’s dig in.

Do Dogs Need Grains?

Yes — Especially Active Dogs Do.

This is where misinformation has confused many dog owners.

Dogs can digest grains efficiently. They’ve evolved alongside humans long enough to thrive on carbohydrates.

Why Whole Grains Help Adventure Dogs

  • Provide steady, slow-burning energy

  • Support glucose stability during long hikes

  • Prevent the body from burning protein as fuel

  • Support gut health and digestion

  • Aid in maintaining body temperature in cold environments

Sled dogs, herding dogs, SAR dogs, and other canine athletes ALL rely on carbohydrates and grains for endurance.

 Grain-Free Diet Warning

Some grain-free diets — particularly those heavy in legumes — have been linked to heart issues (DCM). Unless your dog has a confirmed allergy, grain-free is not inherently better.

Whole grains = fuel.
Fuel = adventure.

Raw Diets – Popular But Not Always Practical

Raw feeding became trendy because people wanted “natural” diets for their dogs. But natural doesn’t always mean optimal — especially for active dogs.

Why Raw Isn’t the Best Choice for Outdoor Dogs

  • Raw meat can contain Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and parasites

  • Dogs shed these pathogens onto gear, car seats, sleeping bags, bedding

  • Most homemade raw diets are nutritionally unbalanced

  • Raw bones can fracture teeth or cause dangerous blockages

  • There is no scientific evidence raw-fed dogs perform better outdoors

In reality, the risks outweigh the benefits for most adventure-focused households.

Cold-Pressed Dog Food: A Modern, Science-Backed Option

Cold-pressed foods bridge a gap between fresh, raw, and kibble.

 What “Cold-Pressed” Means

Ingredients are mixed and pressed at low temperatures, preserving:

  • Vitamins

  • Omega fatty acids

  • Amino acids

  • Antioxidants

Cold-pressed food is NOT raw — it’s gently cooked, making it safer and more digestible.

Why Cold-Pressed Works for Active Dogs

Cold-pressed foods:

  • Break down faster in the stomach

  • Are highly nutrient-dense

  • Provide clean energy for long days

  • Travel well

  • Are less processed than kibble

This makes them an excellent option for dog owners who want convenient but nutrient-forward meals.

So What Should You Feed an Adventure Dog?

Here’s My Recommendation.**

After decades of training dogs in every environment imaginable, here’s what consistently works:

 1. Choose an AAFCO-complete diet.

Fresh-cooked or cold-pressed are ideal.

 2. Avoid extreme diets.

Strict raw or strict grain-free diets often cause more harm than good.

 3. Prioritize whole grains + quality protein.

Adventure dogs burn carbs — they need replenishment.

 4. Feed for the day’s activity level.

  • Pre-hike: carbs + lean protein

  • During hike: high-fat trail snacks

  • Post-hike: higher protein for recovery

 5. Use a clean, hygienic feeding system designed for whole foods.

Fresh food is amazing — but it’s also messy. That’s why your feeding gear matters.

And speaking of fueling…

Fresh-Cooked Diets: My Personal Choice

I personally feed Jessie fresh-cooked meals (like Ollie). They offer the best of all worlds:

  • High digestibility

  • Balanced carbs + high-quality protein

  • No pathogens

  • Better hydration

  • Clean, whole ingredients

  • Excellent support for muscle recovery

For adventure dogs, these benefits matter. Hydration, digestion, and energy stability can make or break a long hike.

Fuel the Adventure the Right Way
